Riga again eases traffic rules for farm cargo heading to the port
As the new harvest season begins, Riga has reactivated last year's traffic scheme that eases the movement of agricultural cargo trucks heading to the Port of Riga. Carriers must register in the “i.rop” electronic system to use designated street sections with less congestion.
With the active harvest season underway, Riga has again put into effect the traffic arrangement introduced last year that gives agricultural cargo carriers easier passage on their way to deliver crops to the Port of Riga. The scheme was jointly developed by Riga municipal institutions and the Freeport of Riga Authority.
To benefit from the relaxed rules, carriers must register in advance in the port's electronic system “i.rop” and obtain digital confirmation from the specific terminal they are heading to. According to municipal officials, this approach proved effective last year, speeding up cargo delivery to terminals while significantly reducing truck congestion on city streets and access roads to the port.
Eased traffic on designated streets
The relaxed regime applies to several street sections in Riga: part of Akmeņu Street between Mūkusalas and Valguma streets, part of Daugavgrīvas Street between Raņķa dambis and Lidoņu Street, part of Mūkusalas Street between Kārļa Ulmaņa gatve and Akmeņu Street, the whole of Raņķa dambis, and part of Valguma Street between Akmeņu Street and Uzvaras bulvāris. Road signs in these sections have been supplemented with a note that the exception applies only to agricultural cargo carriers registered in “i.rop” who are heading to port terminals.
Municipal representatives say the digital registration system reduces waiting time at terminals and prevents trucks from idling, while data from the port system is shared with relevant municipal services so they can monitor compliance and respond quickly to changes in traffic conditions.
A representative of a farmers' organization stressed that exports are important because existing grain storage capacity cannot hold all the agricultural produce grown in Latvia, including grains, rapeseed, peas and beans, making it necessary to export part of the harvest promptly while harvesting continues through August and into early September.
According to available data, in 2025 the Port of Riga handled 2.94 million tonnes of bulk agricultural cargo, accounting for nearly half of all such cargo handled at Latvian ports. Most of this cargo arrives at the port by truck — last year around 72,000 trucks were involved.
