Riga closes riverside street for anniversary events without warning drivers

On the morning of Tuesday, August 11, Riga closed the 11 November Embankment ahead of the city's 825th anniversary celebrations this weekend, but failed to warn residents in advance, causing long traffic jams. Many Riga residents faced long traffic jams on Tuesday morning, August 11, after the 11 November Embankment was unexpectedly closed to traffic.

The street was shut down ahead of celebrations marking Riga's 825th anniversary, which will take place this coming weekend. However, city residents and visitors were not informed in advance about the closure.

City council response

The Riga City Council acknowledged it had made a mistake by not warning the public about the street closure ahead of time. Council representatives addressed the issue on LSM.lv's program "Let's Discuss It Tonight," urging residents and visitors to keep an eye out for further traffic organization changes related to preparations for the anniversary festivities.
