Riga hosts its largest-ever “Spice e-Auto Day”
Thousands of visitors attended the third annual “Spice e-Auto Day” at the Spice shopping centre in Riga, where more than 30 electric vehicle models were on display and available for test drives. The event coincided with a record 32 entries in this year's “Latvia e-Auto 2026/27” competition.
The Spice shopping centre in Riga hosted its third annual “Spice e-Auto Day,” which organizers described as the largest edition yet. Thousands of visitors had the chance to view and test-drive more than 30 electric vehicle models available on the Latvian market, ranging from compact city cars to SUVs and premium-segment vehicles. The event was opened by Riga City Council chairman Viesturs Kleinbergs, who noted the growing number of electric vehicles on Riga's streets and stressed that urban mobility needs to be addressed comprehensively, including public transport.
Record number of competition entries
The event was closely tied to the “Latvia e-Auto 2026/27” competition, which this year received 32 electric vehicle entries for jury evaluation — the highest number in the competition's history. Most of these models were also on display at the Spice e-Auto Day. For the first time, the competition includes entries from Tesla and Zeekr. Competition organizer Roberts Jansons said visitors had varied motivations, from trying an electric vehicle for the first time to comparing specific models before purchase, with several attendees reportedly finalizing a car purchase agreement on the spot.
Technology becoming more accessible
Industry representatives noted that electric vehicles are no longer designed to visually stand out and are increasingly judged by the same criteria as any other car. Battery capacity and charging speed have improved significantly in recent years, and features once limited to premium models are now available in more affordable ones as well. Experts pointed to the Mazda 6e as an example of high build quality from a brand outside the traditional premium segment.
Visitors could also get consultations on public and everyday EV charging, financing options, and car subscription or rental services, along with free family activities such as a driving simulator and a remote-control drift track. Winners of the “Latvia e-Auto 2026/27” competition across various categories will be announced on October 20.
