Man in Riga kills acquaintance and bites off wife's ear after joint drinking
A man was detained in Riga after beating an acquaintance to death and biting off part of his partner's ear on the same day, following a bout of joint drinking. He had prior convictions for crimes against life, health and property.
Latvia's State Police told the LETA news agency that a man has been detained in Riga after causing fatal injuries to an acquaintance and mutilating his partner.
What happened
On August 17, police were called to Riga's Latgale suburb over a suspected killing of a woman in an abandoned garden house. Officers arriving at the scene found the body of a woman born in 1976. A man born in 1992 was detained at the same location on suspicion of the killing.
The investigation established that several people had been drinking alcohol together beforehand. A conflict broke out between the man and the woman, during which he beat his acquaintance. She later died from her injuries.
Partner also attacked
As investigators continued piecing together the events, they found that on the same day, shortly before the killing, the man had also committed a crime against his partner, a woman born in 1985. During a domestic dispute, he bit off part of her ear.
Following the incident, the injured woman went to another neighborhood, where police located her and called in medical assistance.
Prior criminal record
Police noted that the suspect had previously been convicted multiple times for crimes against life and health, as well as property offenses.
On August 19, a court ordered the suspect held in custody as a preventive measure.
