Currently, most cruise vessels calling at Riga dock in port areas further from the centre, so removing part of the dam could expand the city's ability to host such ships nearer downtown.

According to the port authority, the move could give new momentum to redeveloping the Andrejsala waterfront. The area has long been seen as one of Riga's underused waterside spaces with potential for public use.
