Heavy rain caused serious traffic problems in Riga on Saturday afternoon as roadways flooded in multiple locations across the city. Deputy Mayor Edvards Ratnieks reported the situation on social media.

Worst conditions near the bridges

According to Ratnieks, the most affected area is the stretch of 11 November Embankment under the Stone Bridge (Akmens tilts), where water levels have risen significantly. Traffic there is currently only hindered, but the road may need to be closed entirely. A similar situation has been observed under the Salu Bridge.

Earlier in the day, some roadways had already been flooded by the rain, and the problem has continued to spread since.

Crews deployed across several streets

Riga's municipal services have mobilized six water-pumping units ready for deployment, with two more held in reserve. The city says additional equipment can be brought in if needed.

Pumping operations are currently underway on several Riga streets and roadways, including Mālpils, Daugavgrīvas and Mores streets, Ostas Avenue, Vērdiņu, Gobas, Plēksnes, Piena, Sermuliņu and Lutriņu streets, as well as Slāvu Circle.

The deputy mayor urged residents to exercise caution while traveling and to expect possible traffic disruptions as crews continue working to address the effects of the rain.
