Road sign combination in Riga leaves drivers puzzled

A discussion has broken out on social media over an unusual combination of road signs and markings at a Riga intersection, which some drivers say is hard to understand. Opinions are split between blaming traffic planners and blaming drivers' lack of knowledge of the rules.

A discussion has emerged on the social network X over an unusual combination of road signs and pavement markings at an intersection in Riga. The debate was started by user Artūrs Zvejsalnieks, who posted a photo of the location and asked for an explanation of what the sign combination actually means. He questioned why the traffic layout was designed in a way that would require a driver to spend a long time studying the traffic regulations just to understand it.

Opinions divided

Comments on the post were mixed. Some users pointed out that the photo shows signs numbered 718, 719 and 720 — "Lane driving directions" — which indicate the number of lanes and the permitted directions of travel in each one, adding that such knowledge can be gained at any driving school. Others noted that this particular traffic scheme and set of rules have been in place at the location for years.

At the same time, many commenters found the combination confusing, making ironic remarks about how the signs seemed to have been chosen and placed, as well as about the overall quality of traffic planning. Several suggested that the photo itself shows how well, or poorly, drivers actually understand and follow the rules at that spot.

Confusion at the intersection

One commenter described the issue in more detail, saying that when approaching a T-shaped intersection, a sign gives the impression that driving straight ahead is allowed, even though this does not appear to be a real option once at the intersection itself. The pavement markings add further confusion, they said. Another user addressed the Riga City Council directly, asking why a lane had been created at the intersection of Ģertrūdes and Satekles streets that drivers are not allowed to use, and questioning whether it is intended for public transport.

Other participants in the discussion stressed that the problem may lie not with the signs themselves, but with drivers' insufficient knowledge of the traffic regulations.
