A fire broke out on Friday evening in the first-floor boiler room of a two-storey residential building on Vecāķu prospekts in Riga, Latvia. The information came from the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD), the national agency that fights fires and carries out rescue operations, which spoke to the news agency LETA. One resident had to be rescued, though the source does not mention any injuries.

How the response unfolded

The service received the call at 22:23. On arrival, firefighters found household items and waste burning in the boiler room over an area of ten square metres. Two people had already left the building before rescuers arrived, while firefighters brought one more person out from the second floor. Work at the scene was completed at 23:39.

Possible link to the power outage

As previously reported, electricity supply in the Vecāķu prospekts area was disrupted on Friday at around the same time. There is no information on whether the fire was connected to the power interruption.

The service's workload over the day

Between 6:30 on Friday and 6:30 on Saturday, VUGD received 67 calls. Of these, 12 were for fire-fighting, 40 for rescue work, and 15 turned out to be false alarms.
