Riga's smart sensor solutions still operate on a small scale

Riga already uses sensors and real-time data to monitor traffic, safety and air quality, but so far on a relatively small scale. In future, sensors might even report new potholes at intersections.

Smart solutions are operating in Riga, using sensors and real-time data to help monitor traffic, safety, air quality and other aspects of city life. For now, however, such systems are used on a relatively small scale in the Latvian capital.

This was explained on the Latvian Radio programme "Zināmais nezināmajā" by Laine Celma, acting director of the Riga Digital Agency, and Jānis Braunfelds and Nauris Silkāns, researchers at Riga Technical University. The discussion looked at how far Riga has come on the way to becoming a smart city.

The aim is to keep the rhythm of the city smooth: data from sensors lets the city see sooner what is happening. In future, sensors might even be able to report new potholes at intersections.
