Giant kites soar over the Daugava as Riga's skies turn into a stage
The international air kite festival “Fantadroms” took place at Riga's passenger port, with large-scale flying sculptures soaring above the Daugava river. The event drew both participants and spectators and generated attention on social media.

On Saturday, the international air kite festival “Fantadroms” was held at Riga's passenger port, with impressive flying sculptures and colorful kites rising into the sky above the Daugava river. The event attracted both festival participants and onlookers who watched from the riverbank.
Kite artists from Europe, Australia and China took part in the festival. Visitors had the chance to see large-format kites as well as sport kite demonstrations, kiteboarding and other performances.
Social media attention
The event also sparked interest online — a user on the social platform Threads, upon seeing the figures flying above the Daugava, jokingly compared them to “Dementors” — the dark, ghost-like creatures from the Harry Potter films.
Additional activities
Alongside the kite flights, the festival programme also included creative workshops for visitors, a designated picnic area for relaxation, and a stone-balancing performance.
