Riga’s 825th anniversary month to open with mural unveiling and Left Bank festival
Riga will mark its 825th birthday throughout August with events across the city; the celebrations start on 1 August with a mural unveiling on Smilga Street and the Left Bank festival.
Riga’s 825th birthday celebrations will begin this weekend and continue throughout August. The opening is set for 1 August, with two first events: the unveiling of a mural on Smilga Street and the Left Bank festival. These will mark the start of a month-long programme spread across the whole city.
The motto of the festivities is "Open Riga! Code: 825!". It invites people to see and discover Riga anew, turning the anniversary into an opportunity to explore familiar and unfamiliar parts of the city. The celebration will not be limited to one venue; events are planned in many parts of Riga.
On the first day, a mural will be revealed on Smilga Street, adding a new piece of public art to the urban environment. At the same time, the Left Bank festival will take place, centring attention on the Daugava’s left bank and its communities.
With the city’s 825th anniversary as a backdrop, Riga’s August programme is intended to encourage residents and visitors to reconnect with the capital. The motto “Open Riga! Code: 825!” sums up the idea: to look at Riga with fresh eyes, to enter new places and to experience what the city has to offer. The anniversary month will run through August, beginning with the 1 August opening events.
