Riga libraries host poetry evenings ahead of Poetry Days

The Riga Central Library and the Latvian Writers' Union have launched a series of events leading up to the annual Poetry Days celebration. This year the traditional prelude to the festival began earlier than usual — already in August.

Meeting poets face to face

At several branches of the Riga Central Library, author evenings are being organized where visitors can listen to poets reading their own works or translations. The format also allows attendees to take part in conversation with the authors themselves.

The initiative offers a rare opportunity to meet a "living poet" in person and learn directly about their creative work and views on literature. Such direct contact with an author is often considered a valuable experience both for poetry enthusiasts and for those encountering a particular writer's work for the first time.

A partnership between a library and a writers' organization

The events bring together two important players in cultural life — the Riga Central Library, which provides the venues and access to a broad readership, and the Latvian Writers' Union, which represents and involves the authors themselves. This collaboration brings poetry closer to readers right where they already go — their local libraries.

The evenings are being held at multiple branches of the Riga Central Library across the city, giving residents of different districts a chance to take part rather than concentrating the events in a single location.
