A road accident occurred in central Riga on Wednesday, involving an international FlixBus coach and a tram, just as passengers were setting off on what was meant to be a roughly 30-hour journey from Riga to Munich.

The collision happened at the intersection of Lastādijas and Centrāltirgus streets, shortly after the bus had picked up its passengers at the Riga bus station. While maneuvering through the intersection, which offers poor visibility, the coach struck a tram that was in the driver's so-called blind spot, leaving him unable to avoid the collision.

Driver's account

The bus driver explained that when driving in the outer lane, spotting a tram in that position is effectively impossible. He said his rearview mirror only showed the edge of the road and the second lane, and that the tram only became visible once it was already right beside the bus window.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident. Still, it gave a jolt to passengers whose long journey to Germany had barely begun.

No further details about the cause of the accident or possible responsibility have been released so far.
