Exterior of Riga Central Station's Southern Part to Be Completed Soon, but Passengers Will Benefit Only in 2028

According to Latvian Television, the external construction of Riga Central Station's southern section is nearing completion, and its exterior will be finished in the near future. However, passengers will only be able to fully utilize the new spaces and platforms in 2028, after all railway infrastructure work—including tracks, signaling systems, and catenary—is completed. Project implementers state that work on the railway infrastructure will continue without interruption after the station building is finished, as funding for these phases has been secured. The new southern section is planned primarily for electric trains, while the northern part will retain existing infrastructure, including wooden platforms.

A major challenge is the lack of funding for the full implementation of the Rail Baltica project. Consequently, some already-built objects will need to be preserved using state funds, which could cost several million euros. To make use of the completed spaces until train service begins, there are plans to use them for exhibitions and other public events.
