Riga Central Market begins adapting Vegetable Pavilion for meat and fish traders

SIA "Rīgas nami" has launched the next phase of development at Riga Central Market. By spring 2027, the former Vegetable Pavilion will be transformed into a space for meat sales, with the possibility of temporarily housing fish traders while the Fish Pavilion undergoes reconstruction. This is part of a long-term plan to sequentially renovate all historic pavilions while keeping the market operational.

According to Ojārs Valkers, chairman of the board at SIA "Rīgas nami," the goal is to restore the pavilions by the market's centenary in 2030, preserving their unique character while creating a modern, safe environment. The current phase is a prerequisite for the Fish Pavilion renovation: after completion, meat traders will move into the adapted Vegetable Pavilion, allowing the Fish Pavilion to be closed for reconstruction.

To begin work, trading in the Vegetable Pavilion will cease on August 1, and by mid-August, industrial goods vendors will relocate to other areas of the market. Each tenant is being offered alternative solutions to ensure business continuity.

The renovation includes replacing floors and engineering communications, as well as installing cold storage rooms and cooling systems. Total costs are estimated at approximately €1.9 million.

Meanwhile, the Dairy Pavilion renovation continues, which will eventually become a modern dining pavilion. Since SIA "Rīgas nami" took over market management in 2023, over €4.4 million has been invested in development and urgent repairs, including the Vegetable Pavilion roof and Dairy Pavilion structural reinforcements.

During the changes, the market will remain open, with additional signage and information to help visitors locate traders in their new spots.
