Riga City Council corruption scandals: where the key figures are now

For years, media outlets including Re:Baltica have reported signs of corruption and nepotism in Riga City Council administration under the Harmony and Honor to Serve Riga parties. Five people linked to these cases are now running in Saeima elections.

During the period when Riga City Council was led by the Harmony party and later its successor, Honor to Serve Riga (GKR), media outlets repeatedly drew attention to alleged governance violations within the municipality. The investigative outlet Re:Baltica, along with other publications, has reported multiple times that people connected to the ruling political force were present in nearly every structural unit of the city council.

Procurement and financial schemes

Reports also pointed to cases where municipal procurement contracts were concluded at inflated prices, alongside various financial schemes tied to the council's operations. These issues have been the focus of journalistic investigations for years, though many of the cases have dragged on in courts for extended periods with mixed outcomes.

Link to the current election

Despite the publicly known allegations of wrongdoing, five people connected to these cases have now put forward their candidacies for the upcoming Saeima elections. This has again raised questions about how society and the judicial system have responded to corruption risks in municipal governance that have been known for years.
