This year's Riga Photo Biennale includes a solo exhibition by photographer Ruta Kalmuka, titled "Dzen", which can be seen at the ISSP gallery until July 2. Kalmuka's work consists of large-format pieces created using analog techniques. She uses a camera similar to those employed by several world-famous photographers about a hundred years ago.
Among these photographers are Alfred Stieglitz, considered the "grandfather" of fine art photography, and Ansel Adams, a pioneer of wild mountain landscape photography. Later, this same technique was also used by one of the most controversial artists, American photographer Sally Mann, whose photographs of children once significantly shook societal notions of what is acceptable to show publicly and what should remain a secret.
