A search operation for a missing Norwegian citizen in Riga has ended in tragedy, after the man's body was pulled from a canal on September 16.

The missing man was identified as Sondre Schwemcke Lersbryggen, born in 2004, whom the State Police Riga Eastern Department had declared missing on September 12. This means the search lasted roughly four days before his body was recovered.

Police confirmed the discovery to the news portal Apollo.lv. Further details about the circumstances — including how the young man ended up in the water, how long the body had been in the canal, and the possible cause of death — have not yet been made public. Such details are typically clarified through further investigation.

The case adds to a list of incidents in which foreign travelers have been injured or died while in Latvia. Such events tend to draw attention both in Latvia and in the traveler's home country, and the relevant diplomatic missions are usually informed of such cases.
