Riga Airport is set to carry out a major infrastructure project – the reconstruction of apron 4 covering more than 80,000 square meters. The project is supported by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). After reconstruction, the apron will feature ten parking stands for A to E class aircraft in various configurations, along with taxiways and service roads.

This will provide additional space for large aircraft, including cargo and military planes. Laila Odiņa, Chair of the Board of Riga Airport, noted that the renovated apron will significantly strengthen regional military mobility, which is particularly important given the current geopolitical situation. She added that the airport's development strategy envisions creating a cargo handling area – a "cargo city" – near aprons 4 and 5, offering new opportunities for Latvian exporters.

Riga Airport already handles nearly 40% of air cargo in the Baltic states, and in the first four months of this year, cargo volumes have increased by 61%. The airport is implementing a long-term development strategy that also includes investments in sustainability, such as transitioning to eco-friendly ground equipment, using renewable energy, and improving energy efficiency.

Jevgenijs Ivanovs, Head of Corporate Banking at Swedbank, emphasized that the geopolitical situation demands secure and extensive infrastructure, and financial sector support helps turn ideas into real projects that enhance regional connectivity and resilience.
