Following devastating floods in Nepal and a mudslide in Tibet that have killed and left missing hundreds of people, people are invited to gather at Riga Airport on Sunday, August 30, at 17:50, to show support for those waiting for news about their loved ones. The time was chosen because it coincides with when the affected group of travelers had originally been scheduled to fly home.

The organizer behind the call notes that this period is especially hard for people who cannot reach their loved ones by phone, hear their voice, or simply confirm they are safe. The appeal states that everyone currently needs support, but this is especially true for those waiting for word about people close to them who cannot be contacted.

Participants are invited to form a close circle together and spend a few minutes sending strength, resilience, love and faith to those affected. As a sign of recognition among participants, attendees are asked to pin a white ribbon to their chest.

Situation in Nepal

Nepal is currently experiencing one of the most severe natural disasters of recent years. The death toll from the floods has risen to 633, and two days after the disaster, the search for survivors continues.

Latvia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received information about 39 Latvian tourists who may currently be in Nepal. The ministry's Consular Department reports that relatives have been unable to reach 29 of these people since the disaster struck.
