Organizers of the Rimi Riga Marathon have released calculations showing the event's economic contribution to Latvia over the past three years, with the total impact reaching nearly €45 million.
Foreign participants drive the impact
Most of that sum stems from spending brought into the Latvian economy by foreign runners and the people accompanying them. According to the organizers, international participants and their companions contributed approximately €38.5 million to Latvia's economy over the three-year period.
This means the bulk of the marathon's economic effect is directly tied to the tourism flow the event attracts from abroad — runners traveling to compete typically also use accommodation, dining and other services, generating additional revenue for local businesses.
Organizers presented these figures to highlight the marathon's significance not only as a sporting event but also as an economically important occasion for the country. The published information does not specify the calculation methodology or a year-by-year breakdown.
