Riga's night buses carried twice as many passengers this year as last year

Nearly 22,000 passengers have used night buses in Riga in under half a year, about double last year's figure. Most night routes stopped at the end of September, but buses between the airport and the city centre will keep running.

Night buses in Riga have been used by almost 22,000 passengers in less than half a year. That is roughly twice as many as last year, when there were significantly fewer night routes. The figures were provided to Latvian Radio by Rīgas satiksme, the company that runs public transport in the Latvian capital.

What happens next

Most night routes finished operating at the end of September, so those lines no longer run overnight. However, the buses connecting the airport and the city centre will continue to run after that date.

Comparison with last year

Rīgas satiksme links the growth in passenger numbers to the fact that this year a much wider night network was on offer than last year. Last year there were significantly fewer night routes, which meant fewer ways to get around the city after dark.

The source gives only the total number of passengers and the comparison with the previous year. No figures are provided for individual routes or for how many passengers used the airport buses.

The airport–centre connection remains in place after the end of the season, so it will still be possible to travel overnight from the airport into the city and in the opposite direction.
