Rīgas nami: Closure of Meat Pavilion Is Result of Long-Term Deterioration, Not Sudden Issue
SIA “Rīgas nami” explains that the closure of the Riga Central Market Meat Pavilion is due to the wear and tear of the nearly 100-year-old building and long-accumulated technical challenges, accelerated by an updated technical inspection and the Building Authority's decision.

SIA “Rīgas nami” emphasizes that the closure of the Riga Central Market Meat Pavilion is not related to a sudden problem but is a consequence of long-term deterioration. The pavilion, a national architectural monument, has been in operation since 1930. The company ordered an updated technical inspection in early 2026, the results of which led to an extraordinary inspection by the Building Authority (BVKB) and a decision on June 11 to prohibit use until hazards are eliminated.
As early as 2017, BVKB required the then-manager to address additional loads, and by 2018 those risks were resolved. A 2020 technical inspection found unsatisfactory condition of some load-bearing elements, but the overall structure met requirements. Local safety measures were implemented. In 2021–2022, technical solutions for restoration were developed, and in May 2022 a building permit was issued for partial renovation with a deadline of May 2027.
Since mid-2022, when “Rīgas nami” took over market management, until 2025, investments exceeded €2.4 million, mainly for the restoration of the former Vegetable and Dairy Pavilions. The development concept planned sequential renovation of all five pavilions and relocation of meat trade to renovated pavilions by spring 2027. BVKB's decision has significantly accelerated this process.
Currently, the company is working on temporary solutions for tenants to ensure meat product availability within the market area. Some traders have already moved to other sales points. “Rīgas nami” promises to inform about specific solutions in the near future.
