18th-century statue of Themis to return to Riga Town Hall
On August 13, ahead of Riga's 825th anniversary, the historic 18th-century statue of the goddess of justice Themis will return to the Riga Town Hall, city council representatives announced.
Riga City Council has announced that on August 13 the historic statue of Themis, dating back to the 18th century, will be returned to the Town Hall building. The event coincides with preparations to mark the city's 825th anniversary.
Until now, a copy of the statue has adorned the Town Hall's facade, while the original 18th-century sculpture was carefully preserved elsewhere. After spending years in safekeeping, the historic artwork will now be placed very close to its original historical location.
City council representatives noted that the statue's return carries symbolic significance tied to the city's anniversary, serving as a reminder of the Town Hall's heritage and its connection to the idea of justice and law embodied by the figure of Themis.
