Riga City Festival Gets €1.6 Million Budget This Year — Waterfront Events Cost the Most
Riga City Council's Culture Department says €1.6 million from the municipal budget has been allocated for this year's Riga City Festival and summer culture program, with waterfront events at 11 November Embankment the biggest expense.
The organization of this year's Riga City Festival and summer culture program has been allocated €1.6 million from the municipal budget. Baiba Šmite, head of the Culture Department at Riga City Council's Education, Culture and Sport Department, explained the cost breakdown on the TV24 program "Ziņu top. Rīga runā."
According to Šmite, the largest share of the budget goes toward events on 11 November Embankment, since this location requires complex technical infrastructure — stages, equipment, and a continuous program running from morning until late at night. Additional costs come from light shows, making this venue the most technologically demanding of all festival locations.
What else makes up the budget
Šmite noted that total costs go beyond technical setup alone. A significant portion covers creative expenses, copyright and performer payments, as well as value-added tax. Funds are also needed for the city's festive decorations and general organizational support for the various events.
About 40 events throughout the month
This year's festival program includes roughly 40 cultural events. The main celebration of Riga's 825th anniversary took place on 15 August, though individual events will continue across the city throughout August.
The Culture Department head stressed that costs should not be assessed separately from the expected number of visitors — organizers hope the festival events will draw more than 200,000 people in total. Given this figure, the municipal representative considers the €1.6 million expenditure to be proportionate.
