Rinkēvičs on Latvian citizens missing in Nepal: "We really hope to receive good news"
President Edgars Rinkēvičs says Latvia's diplomatic service continues working to locate Latvian citizens missing in Nepal, though the effort is hampered by widespread destruction in the country. Two days after devastating floods, search operations for survivors are ongoing in Nepal.
Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs stated on social media that Latvia's diplomatic and consular service continues its efforts to gather information about Latvian citizens who remain missing in Nepal. According to him, the work is significantly hindered by the extensive damage and high death toll in the country.
The president noted that Latvia's foreign service and the country's honorary consul in Nepal are maintaining regular contact with Nepalese authorities, as well as with European Union diplomats and embassies of EU member states, in order to gather available information.
Uncertainty is the hardest part
Rinkēvičs acknowledged that the uncertainty over the fate of the missing individuals is the hardest thing for their relatives and friends to bear. He expressed understanding of the worry, grief, helplessness and sometimes anger felt by loved ones, and voiced hope that more news about the missing Latvian citizens would arrive soon — and that it would be good news.
Aftermath of the floods
Two days after the devastating floods struck Nepal, search operations for survivors continue across the country. In his post, the president thanked staff of Latvia's diplomatic and consular service, colleagues from EU member states, and Latvia's honorary consul in Nepal, Karan Vaidya, for their work amid the difficult situation.
