Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs on Friday, June 19, sent the Immigration Law back to the Saeima for re-examination. The president proposes to reconsider the provision that allows temporary residence permits to be issued in exchange for investments in Latvia.

According to presidential advisor Mārtiņš Drēģeris, Rinkēvičs has asked the Saeima to reevaluate this specific norm. The decision was made because the president believes the current wording may not serve the country's best interests or could lead to unintended consequences.

The Saeima must now review the bill again and decide whether to support the president's proposal. If the parliament approves the same version in a second reading, the president can either sign it into law or return it again.

The issue of residence permits for investments has been a topic of debate in Latvia, and the president's action highlights the need for a thorough assessment of the rule's impact on national security and the economy.
