Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs is set to begin political consultations with representatives of the parties and party alliances that have secured seats in the newly elected Saeima, following the parliamentary election.
According to the announced schedule, these meetings will appear on the president's agenda starting October 5.
Purpose of the meetings
It is standard practice for the president to hold consultations with all political forces elected to the Saeima after an election, in order to gauge their positions on forming the next government. These talks typically form the basis on which the president later decides which politician to invite to put forward a candidacy for prime minister.
The exact list of meetings and the number of participating parties will become clear once the Central Election Commission confirms the preliminary election results and it is established which parties and alliances have crossed the electoral threshold and secured seats in the new Saeima.
This process is part of the constitutional procedure followed after every Saeima election to form a new government: the president has the authority to nominate a candidate for prime minister, and this decision is usually preceded by exactly this kind of consultation with the parties elected to parliament.
