Amid increasing illegal migration pressure on the Latvia–Belarus border, the National Security Council has agreed on additional border strengthening measures. President Edgars Rinkēvičs stated in the Latvian Television program "Rīta panorāma" that security cannot be ensured solely with a fence and technical systems. He stressed the importance of the ability to respond quickly to any threats.

The new measures include both the enhancement of existing fences and surveillance systems, as well as raising the readiness of mobile response units. The president noted that border guards and involved services must be able to act promptly to prevent illegal border crossings. Rinkēvičs pointed out that the current situation requires continuous assessment and a flexible approach.
