Dutch duo wins women's elite title in Rio de Janeiro; Latvians already golden
At the Rio de Janeiro elite beach volleyball event, Dutch pair Stam/Shona took the women's gold, while the men's title had already gone to Latvia's Plavins/Fokerots.
The elite beach volleyball tournament in Rio de Janeiro has produced its final medalists. In the women's competition, the gold went to the Netherlands, while the men's event had already been won by Latvia's top pair.
Women's final
The Dutch team of Katja Stama and Raisa Shona, seeded third, defeated the top-seeded Brazilian duo Karola and Rebeka 21:16, 21:16 in the final. With that result, the Dutch pair claimed the elite-stage trophy.
Bronze matches
In the women's bronze medal match, sixth-seeded Americans Kelly Chen and Megan Kraft beat the 20th-seeded French pair Clemence Viera and Aline Chamereau 21:13, 21:9.
The men's bronze went to France's Theo Rotar and Arnaud Gautier-Rat, the eighth seeds. They rallied to beat Austria's Timo Hammarberg and Tim Berger, seeded 13th, 18:21, 21:16, 15:13.
Latvian gold
As reported earlier, Latvia's Martins Plavins and Kristians Fokerots, the second seeds, clinched the men's title with a 21:17, 21:11 victory over French opponents Remi Bassereau and Calvin Aye, the third seeds.
Winners of the elite event receive 1200 ranking points and $40,000 in prize money, while runners-up earn 1100 points and $23,000.
