Riot Games to end active development of 2XKO in December

Riot Games will stop active development of its fighting game 2XKO in December, saying the title costs far more to run than it earns. Servers will remain online and the game will stay free to download.

Riot Games has announced it will end active development of 2XKO, its first fighting game, in December. The company says the decision comes down to costs that greatly outweigh the revenue the game generates, with player engagement staying largely flat even after major updates.

Starting August 20, players can no longer buy KO Points, the currency used in the game's store. Riot has also begun refunding purchases made before that date. PC players should receive refunds within two weeks, with all PC refunds expected to be finished by November. On PlayStation and Xbox, customer support teams may contact players in the coming weeks to confirm payment details before issuing refunds.

Final content on the way

On September 8, patch 1.3.1 will add a new champion, the support mage Lux, alongside a $40 "2XKO Ultimate Bundle" containing most of the game's cosmetics, including items for Lux. The same update will let players buy items like stages and profile cosmetics with in-game currency, remove Ranked mode, and unlock every champion for free.

The game's final new character, the gun-wielding Samira, arrives in October's patch 1.3.3, potentially followed by bug-fix patches in December if needed. After that, 2XKO's servers will stay online and the game will remain free to download on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

2XKO launched free on PC, PlayStation and Xbox in January 2026, marking Riot's biggest console push since bringing Valorant to consoles in 2024. Signs of trouble emerged in February, when the company laid off half of the game's development team. Riot says that while dedicated fighting-game fans embraced 2XKO, it failed to attract a wider audience at the scale needed to justify continued investment.
