In July, several Latvian athletes took part in a variety of international endurance competitions, some of them unusual and prestigious.

Ultrarunner Rihards Kalniņš competed in the Heavy Metal Ultra (HMU) race in Estonia, held in the Backyard Ultra (BYU) format. After 45 hours of competition, he finished in second place, having covered a total of 301.77 kilometers.

Meanwhile, Edgars Daugulis, Latvia's champion in the vertical kilometer discipline, took part in the renowned Swiss race Sierre-Zinal. This came just a week after he competed in the Gauja Trail by UTMB event.

Growing engagement in endurance sport

Both results reflect continued participation by Latvian athletes in international endurance and grassroots sporting events, spanning both extended endurance formats and mountain running.
