Explosion at Rivne police station kills bomb disposal officer, injures three

An explosion in the courtyard of a police station in Rivne, Ukraine, killed one bomb disposal specialist and injured three other officers while explosives technicians were on duty. A criminal case has been opened over negligent storage of weapons.

An explosion occurred around 3:30 p.m. local time on August 31 in the inner courtyard of police station No. 1 in Rivne, Ukraine, while officers from the explosive ordnance disposal service were carrying out their duties, regional police reported.

The blast killed one specialist from the explosives unit and injured three other officers from the same police division.

Investigation launched

Ukraine's State Bureau of Investigation has opened a pre-trial investigation under Article 264 of the Criminal Code, which covers negligent storage of firearms or ammunition.

Initial reports after the explosion confirmed one death and three injuries among law enforcement officers, with the fatality later identified as a member of the bomb disposal unit. The exact circumstances of the incident remain under investigation.
