From September 16 to 22, Latvia's State Police took part in "ROADPOL Road Safety Days," a campaign organized by the European traffic police network. Throughout the week, officers across the country stepped up monitoring of road users in an effort to reduce dangerous and careless driving.
The initiative is part of a broader European-wide effort in which traffic police services from multiple countries participate simultaneously, aiming to draw public attention to road safety issues and reduce the number of traffic accidents.
Fatalities and violations
During the campaign, three people were killed on Latvia's roads. At the same time, police recorded dozens of cases in which drivers operated vehicles while under the influence of alcohol — a behavior that remains one of the leading factors contributing to serious traffic accidents.
The State Police said it will continue to focus on road safety beyond the campaign's official conclusion, urging drivers to follow traffic rules and act responsibly behind the wheel.
