Latvia considers involving National Defence Service soldiers in Belarus border protection

Deputy Chief of the State Border Guard General Juris Martukāns has said the situation on the Latvia-Belarus border has become dramatic and that additional human resources are needed. The possibility of involving National Defence Service soldiers in border protection is currently being considered.

General Juris Martukāns, deputy chief of the State Border Guard, has said the situation on the Latvia-Belarus border is dramatic and that the border guard needs more personnel to protect it. He made the statement on Latvian Radio's programme "Krustpunktā".

According to Martukāns, the possibility of involving soldiers from the National Defence Service in border protection is currently under consideration. No final decision has been made yet, as the matter is still being evaluated.

The senior official's remarks come against the backdrop of the current challenges along Latvia's eastern border. The border guard is looking for ways to strengthen border protection in the difficult circumstances described by Martukāns.
