On Thursday, August 27, Rockstar Games released the long-awaited extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6. The 26-minute video was exclusive to Netflix for six hours starting at 3PM ET, before going live on Rockstar's YouTube channel at 9PM ET for wider viewing.

Story and setting

The game takes place in Leonida, a fictionalized version of Florida that includes Vice City, the Leonida Keys with a fake Miami, swamplands, a national park and a seaside port. The story follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a Bonnie and Clyde-style duo who get pulled into a statewide conspiracy after a botched bank heist. Players control both characters at different points, marking the series' first non-optional female protagonist.

What the footage shows

The extended look includes a drug deal interrupted by a police raid, a couple's quiet domestic life in their apartment, robberies of small shops, a car chase that triggers the classic six-star maximum Wanted Level, and a corporate gala that turns into a shootout, with Lucia fighting off an attacker unarmed. The footage closes with a montage featuring a small chihuahua dressed in a tutu. A closing note states the material was captured on a standard PS5.

Background

The reveal comes after a rocky stretch for Rockstar. Fans criticized the studio's $80 physical edition of GTA 6, which contains no physical media, only a code in a box. On August 18, leaked gameplay videos and screenshots began circulating online, exposing parts of the game's mechanics; one leak was later linked to a cryptocurrency scheme. Take-Two has been removing leaked material and has filed requests with Microsoft and Discord to identify the users involved. GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19 following one prior delay.
