Rockstar will offer free GTA 5 upgrades from older console and PC versions
Starting June 18, owners of Grand Theft Auto V on PS4 and Xbox One can upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S version for free, while PC players get a free upgrade to the Enhanced edition.

Rockstar Games has announced free upgrades for Grand Theft Auto V players. Beginning June 18, anyone who owns the game on PS4 or has the digital Xbox One edition can upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S version at no cost. This current-gen version, which originally launched in March 2022 as a paid upgrade, includes visual enhancements and performance improvements, such as faster switching between the three protagonists. Save data and Online progress will transfer when upgrading.
PC players can also get a free upgrade from the older version to the Enhanced edition, which arrived last year. Rockstar says the Enhanced edition includes the same upgrades as the console versions, plus PC-exclusive features like ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination.
Free upgrades are welcome, especially now that more people own a PS5, Xbox Series X/S, or a better PC than four years ago. However, this move might foreshadow Rockstar eventually shutting down GTA Online on PS4 and Xbox One, as it did with PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2021.
GTA fans are still eagerly awaiting entirely different news—more details about Grand Theft Auto VI. It appears Rockstar is sticking to the current November 19 release date after several delays. Parent company Take-Two said the GTA VI marketing machine will ramp up this summer, so the third trailer for the game—the first in over a year—seems imminent.
