Roma stage dramatic late turnaround to beat Gasperini's former club Atalanta
AS Roma came from behind to beat Atalanta 2-1 with an equalizer and a stoppage-time winner, extending their perfect start to three wins and moving to the top of Italy's Serie A table.
In round three of Italy's Serie A, Roma, coached by Gian Piero Gasperini, faced his former club Atalanta. The match at home ended 2-1 in Roma's favor, though the win was far from straightforward.
Roma dominated the opening half, producing 18 shots on goal without breaking the deadlock, while Atalanta managed only a single attempt at goal. Argentine forward Paulo Dybala came closest to scoring for the hosts, firing several shots from close range that failed to find the net.
The second half brought a surprising twist. Just two minutes after the restart, Atalanta took the lead through Brazilian midfielder Ederson, who came close to a summer transfer to Manchester United before the deal collapsed following a failed medical, keeping him in Italy.
Despite trailing, Roma kept pressing and were rewarded in the closing stages. Defender Mario Hermoso leveled the score in the 89th minute, and forward Matías Soulé struck the winning goal in the third minute of stoppage time, sealing a 2-1 victory for the home side.
The result gave Roma a perfect record of three wins from three matches, with ten goals scored so far this season, and lifted the club to first place in the Serie A standings.
