Romance scams continue to cause severe harm in Latvia. According to reports, one victim transferred nearly €100,000 to a scammer over several years—the largest documented amount for this type of crime in the country.

Meanwhile, another Latvian woman, believing a person she met on social media, flew to Africa to meet her online boyfriend. More and more women are falling prey to such fraudsters, and in some cases, despair leads to tragic outcomes—suicides linked to the scams have been recorded.

Experts warn that scammers often use emotional manipulation and build trust over a long period before asking for money. Victims frequently find it hard to admit they have been deceived and continue sending funds even after suspicions arise.
