RSU and SK Latgols start new Estonia-Latvia women's handball league with wins

On the opening weekend of the new Estonia-Latvia women's handball league, RSU and SK Latgols secured victories while Jēkabpils SS and Salaspils SS suffered defeats.

The newly formed Estonia–Latvia women's club handball league began on Saturday, September 19, with all four Latvian teams facing Estonian clubs in the opening round. Two of the four Latvian sides came away with wins.

RSU defeats Estonian champions

Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) beat last season's Estonian champions Mistra 29:27 on home ground. After a closely fought opening, RSU pulled ahead by five goals late in the first half, taking a 17:13 lead into the break. Mistra briefly took the lead early in the second half, but RSU regained control and held on for the win despite the visitors' late attempts to close the gap. Roelofsen was RSU's top scorer, while goalkeepers Kokina and Jensen combined to save a significant share of shots faced.

SK Latgols win away

Current Latvian champions SK Latgols defeated HC Tabasalu 32:29 away from home, having trailed by four goals early in the match. The first half ended level at 16:16, but Latgols broke away in the second half to take control and secure the win.

Two defeats

Jēkabpils SS lost 25:32 away to SK Tapa despite leading early on, as the Estonian club pulled ahead by as much as seven goals after the break. Salaspils SS fell 26:37 at home to KPK Mella, who built a nine-goal lead by halftime.

Team representatives said the new joint league offers valuable experience facing opponents with different playing styles, which is especially useful for younger players.
