University student challenges call-up, citing football coaching job in court appeal

A result of the State Defence Service conscription lottery came as an unexpected shock to a student at Riga Technical University (RTU). The young man had planned his future around studying environmental engineering rather than serving on a military training ground, and after learning he had been placed on the conscription list, he decided to take the matter to court.

Football coaching as an argument

Among the arguments the student is raising against serving is his occupation as a football coach. He believes that this job, combined with his environmental engineering studies, could provide sufficient grounds for being exempted from the State Defence Service or at least having his call-up postponed.

Case goes to court

Rather than simply submitting a request to the relevant authorities, the student has chosen to pursue a formal court case. It will now be up to the court to decide whether his circumstances — his studies and his coaching job — amount to sufficient legal grounds for exemption from conscription. The case illustrates how the lottery-based call-up system can unexpectedly upend the plans of young people who have already committed to civilian careers or other pursuits, prompting some to seek recourse through the courts.
