Romania confirms that one of two drones shot down by fighter jets was a Shahed

Romanian authorities have officially confirmed that the drone shot down near the city of Buzău on July 24 was a Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicle, a type of drone used by Russia in its war against Ukraine. The confirmation came from the country's prosecutor's office, which stated that the drone was downed near the village of Padina in Buzău County.

Following the incident, Romanian experts quickly recovered fragments of both the drone and the interceptor missile that was used to bring it down. These pieces have been sent for detailed examination to determine further specifics. A criminal investigation has been launched regarding the flight within a restricted airspace.

According to Romania's Defense Ministry, the debris from the drone was found in Buzău County. Meanwhile, in the neighboring Brăila County, officials discovered a crater created by another missile along with missile wreckage. Importantly, no injuries were reported and no property damage occurred.

The search is still ongoing for the wreckage of the second drone, which was shot down on the morning of July 25. Earlier reports indicated that the fighter pilot had visually identified the first drone as a Shahed-type UAV. This marks the first time Romania has shot down drones that have violated its airspace, highlighting the ongoing spillover effects from the conflict in Ukraine.
