Romania: Russian drone strikes on Ukraine's Danube ports reach new high

Romanian authorities say Russian drone attacks on Ukraine's Danube ports have recently reached a new peak, with debris repeatedly landing on Romanian territory. Bucharest is developing cheaper defense measures against low-flying drone incursions.

Romanian officials have reported that the intensity of Russian drone strikes on Ukraine's Danube river ports has recently hit an unprecedented high. Ukraine relies on these ports as an alternative export route for grain, turning to them as it seeks safer shipping paths following repeated attacks on its infrastructure.

Debris crossing the border

As the strikes have intensified, debris from the drones has repeatedly landed on Romanian soil, given the country's border runs along the Danube delta next to Ukraine. Although Romania is a NATO member, incidents in which remnants of wartime drones cross into its territory have raised concerns about security risks in border areas.

Romania's response

In response to the growing threat, Bucharest is working on introducing cheaper defense solutions specifically designed to counter low-flying drone incursions. Such measures are seen as a more cost-effective alternative to traditional, more expensive air-defense systems, which are not ideally suited to intercepting small, slow-moving drones.

The situation along the Danube reflects a broader pattern: Ukraine has for some time been forced to reroute grain exports through river ports after Russian forces repeatedly targeted Black Sea port infrastructure. The Danube ports serve as an important alternative trade corridor, but they have now become a more frequent target of attacks as well.
