Romania scrambles fighter jets over drones near Ukrainian border
Overnight on September 23-24, Romania scrambled fighter jets after drones were detected near its border with Ukraine. No airspace violation was reported.
Romania scrambled fighter jets overnight from September 23 to 24 in response to drones detected close to the border with Ukraine, the outlet "European Pravda" reported, citing a statement from Romania's Ministry of National Defence.
The ministry's radar surveillance system detected a group of aerial targets moving north of the settlement of Kiliia-Veke on Ukrainian territory, near the border with Romania.
Spanish jets responded
According to the statement, two F-18 aircraft belonging to Spain's Air and Space Force, which are on combat duty as part of a reinforced air policing mission, took off from the 57th air base to monitor the situation. The air alert was lifted at 05:44. No violation of Romanian airspace was reported.
The incident occurred amid a wider wave of Russian strikes: the same night, Russia carried out another massive attack on Ukrainian territory, including a ballistic strike on Kyiv that left two people dead and eight injured as of the morning.
In response to the Russian attack on Ukrainian regions overnight on September 24, Poland also scrambled its own fighter jets.
