Romania issues second air alert in a day

Romania's border zone experienced its second air alert in one day on Friday, August 2, after an air target was detected near the state border with Ukraine. Romania's Defense Ministry radar surveillance system registered the target at 15:09 near the river border with Ukraine, according to European Pravda.

In response, two F-16 fighter jets of the Romanian Air Force took off at 15:17 to monitor the situation. The National Military Command Center informed the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations that residents in Tulcea County needed to be alerted, and a warning was sent through the RO-Alert system.

Earlier on Sunday morning, around 9:30, Romanian residents were alerted to an air threat after a similar target was recorded. On the evening of July 30, Romania also scrambled two F-16s following the detection of air targets near the Ukrainian border, and local residents received a notification about the danger of an air attack.

Until recently, Romania did not shoot down drones that violated its airspace amid Russian attacks on Ukraine, but that changed at the end of July.
