Crashed drone found in cornfield near Suceava, Romania
A wrecked drone was discovered in a cornfield in Romania's Botoșenița-Mare area, causing a small fire and a roughly one-meter crater. The incident follows several similar drone debris discoveries in the region over recent days.
On Saturday afternoon, a crashed unmanned aerial vehicle was found in a cornfield in the Botoșenița-Mare area of Suceava County, Romania. The discovery was announced by Romania's Ministry of National Defence, according to Digi24, as cited by European Pravda.
According to the ministry, the impact caused a small fire and left a crater approximately one meter in diameter and 30 centimeters deep. No casualties were reported.
Alert issued beforehand
Before the drone was located, the air operations control centers of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova had notified Romania's Ministry of National Defence that a drone had crossed both countries' airspace, heading toward northeastern Romania. In response, two Romanian Air Force F-16 jets took off from the 86th Air Base in Borcea to monitor the situation.
The National Military Command Center informed the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, and an RO-Alert warning was issued for Botoșani County at 16:20. Around the same time, a report came in via the 112 emergency line about a drone spotted over the village of Știubieni in Botoșani County.
Following reconnaissance carried out by Ministry of Internal Affairs forces, the crashed aircraft was located in a cornfield in the Botoșenița-Mare area of Suceava County. A bomb disposal team from Romania's Intelligence Service (SRI) was dispatched to the scene to assess the situation.
This is not the first such incident in recent days — on Friday, debris from multiple drones was found across Romania, some carrying warheads. On September 10, drone wreckage was also found on a Romanian beach, and on the morning of September 11, Romania scrambled F-16 fighters to monitor aerial targets near the border with Ukraine.
