Romania's lower house of parliament has approved a legislative proposal on unification with Moldova without a formal vote, due to the expiration of the 45-day review period. The bill, introduced on April 14 by deputies from the far-right party S.O.S. România, was considered adopted after lawmakers failed to initiate debates or hold a final vote.

Despite negative opinions from the government, the legal committee, and the human rights committee of the Chamber, the bill automatically passed. It now moves to the Romanian Senate, which will make the final decision.

If ultimately approved, the bill would authorize the Romanian government to begin immediate negotiations with Moldova on the potential unification of the two states. According to the text, after the law is passed and published in the Official Gazette, competent international bodies, the Moldovan government, the United States, NATO, the UN, and the European Union would be notified of its implementation.

Romanian President Nikushor Dan stated that unification with Moldova would be possible only when a majority of the neighboring country's population desires it. Moldovan President Maia Sandu previously said she would vote "for" in a referendum on unification. Deputy Prime Minister Eugen Osmochescu noted that Moldova would consider unification with Romania if its path to EU membership becomes difficult or blocked.
