Romanian President Nicușor Dan has nominated conservative Member of the European Parliament Siegfried Mureșan for the post of prime minister, according to the outlet Digi24, as cited by "European Pravda".

Romania has had a caretaker government since May, after Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan failed to survive a confidence vote in parliament. Dan acknowledged that none of the potential candidates currently has a clear majority in parliament, since political parties have been unable to agree on a way forward.

Reasoning behind the choice

Dan explained that he decided to appoint the person who received the most support from parties during that day's consultations. He noted that Mureșan's candidacy was put forward by three parties and that Mureșan has experience in the European Parliament, having long participated in negotiations on important issues, giving him the qualifications needed for the post.

Following the president's announcement, Mureșan wrote on social media that he had accepted the offer to lead the government. Sorin Grindeanu, leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), said he was surprised and disappointed by the choice.

Previous attempts

The first "non-parliamentary" candidate proposed by Dan, Eugen Tomac, withdrew due to insufficient support. Dan then nominated Adrian Veștea of the National Liberal Party (PNL), who also failed to secure the necessary backing. Further consultations with parties paused over the summer break.

Most Romanians want political forces to agree as quickly as possible on forming a full government.
