England's national team suffered a 1-2 defeat to reigning world champions Argentina in the World Cup semifinal, despite taking an early second-half lead through Anthony Gordon. BBC pundits, including former England captain Wayne Rooney, heavily criticized manager Thomas Tuchel for his tactical decisions.

Rooney stated on BBC that Tuchel's choices "cost us this tonight," as defensive substitutions handed Argentina and particularly Lionel Messi too much control and momentum. Gordon was substituted in the 72nd minute for Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa. Rooney argued that attacking players lose hope seeing such defensive changes, realizing the team would have to sit deep for a long time.

Former goalkeeper Joe Hart said Tuchel quickly changed his approach, signaling he no longer believed in his team, and failed to address issues that had persisted under Gareth Southgate. BBC commentator Alan Shearer noted that Tuchel played his cards too early, hoping to preserve the lead, but unlike previous games against Mexico and Norway, the plan backfired.

Journalists and pundits on social media called for Tuchel's dismissal, with many comparing his mistakes to those of Southgate. Rooney described the situation as "pure panic," stating that England lost control and the chance to score a second goal after going ahead, allowing Argentina back into the match.
