Runway launches AI model router as generative media landscape gets crowded
Runway's new Media Router automatically selects the best generative media model based on quality, speed, or cost, marking a shift toward infrastructure.

Runway is no longer content with being just an AI model company. On Thursday, the startup launched Runway Media Router via its Runway Dev platform, a tool that automatically picks the best image, video, or audio generation model based on a developer's priorities: quality, speed, or cost. While model routers are common for large language models, Runway claims this is the first built specifically for generative media.
“The routing really fits into that overall promise of being the easiest one-stop shop for developers to integrate with any type of generative media model,” said Anthony Maggio, Runway’s chief product officer. Runway Dev, launched earlier this month, provides API access to a growing roster of third-party models alongside Runway’s own. Clients include Adobe, Cloudflare, ElevenLabs, Expedia, Shutterstock, and Quora.
The launch comes as the number of generative media models explodes, making it hard for developers to evaluate new releases. The router leverages intelligence from Runway’s in-house creative team, which has assessed how different models handle motion, composition, and lip sync. This technology was originally built for Runway’s conversational AI creative partner.
Maggio noted that Chinese generative media models are gaining popularity, but some businesses may prefer to avoid them due to potential regulatory concerns. The router allows developers to set preferences based on token pricing and quality – a hot topic as enterprises face high costs from agentic AI. The Media Router launches weeks after Runway switched to token-based pricing, which drew criticism.
Runway’s last frontier model, Gen 4.5, topped leaderboards in December, but newer models from Google, ByteDance, and Alibaba have overtaken it. Rather than forcing developers to bet on a single model, Media Router assumes the best model will keep changing. “You need great models underneath, but the orchestration increasingly matters a lot,” said co-founder Anastasis Germanidis. “The router is one way in which the benefits of that come to users.”
